The tale of Duroc hogs dates back to Christopher Columbus, who brought to the New World with him a premium hog breed best known for its red coloring and genetic superiority. This bloodline was kept intact for centuries.
Much later, in the early 1800s, farmer Harry Kelsey owned a famous trotting stallion named “Duroc.” When cattleman Isaac Frink came to see the stallion, he also noticed the remarkable red pigs Kelsey was raising. Frink, fascinated by the animals, purchased some from Kelsey. The hog breed didn’t have an official name, so Frink named them after Kelsey’s prize horse, and the red hogs thus became known as “Duroc.”
Frink’s hogs were renowned for their smoothness and carcass quality, representing the absolute best pork available, and the Duroc breed grew in popularity. All Smithfield DURoC Pork is USDA Processed Verified (PVP) and comes from a sire line that is 100% Duroc.
